subway in tokyo + food/shopping/sightseeing recommendations?

hi, i’ll be going to tokyo in april and i’m concerned about subway tickets as it seems like there are lots of different lines which require different tickets. should i just purchase a suica/pasmo to avoid confusion? is suica/pasmo valid for all the major and minor subway stations in tokyo? is more economical to purchase individual subway tickets instead? also, can someone explain to me the differences between the black and white line and the colourful lines here – http://www.bento.com/pix/subway5.gif?

another question i have would be where to get find best shoyu ramen in tokyo. i’m a big fan but there seems to be no definitive “best shoyu ramen stall”. for tonkotsu, i’m keen on visiting kyushu jangara though i would love some suggestions! (:

also, are there any must-visit places in tokyo? i already know the most popular places and i would love to hear unique suggestions. thanks (:

The map you linked are out of date but I will explain.

In Tokyo and Japan there are more then “subways” people not familiar with trains think all trains are “subways” when that is not the case. Tokyo has a mass transportation system of subways, commuter rail lines, private rail lines etc, all working and moving people into/out and around Tokyo.

The map you linked (again out of date) but the difference is the colored lines are the subway lines, the black lines are rail lines operated by private companies and the black and white lines are rail lines operated by JAPAN RAILWAYS (JR). In Tokyo there are about a dozen different train companies, each with their own train lines, there are two different subway companies.

I don’t want to confuse you, lets just say you need to care about how to buy tickets and not about what train company you ride.

Simply speaking as you mentioned, get a Suica (sold by JR) or a Pasmo card (sold by everyone else) for the Toko area. It doesn’t matter which card you get, Suica works with Pasmo and Pasmo works with Suica, they just have different names but do the same thing.

Suica/Pasmo works for virtually every single railway station/company in the Tokyo area (this includes going down to Kanagawa/Yokohama, Chiba, Saitama etc etc. There might be some very very minor lines that don’t accept it, but those lines are not ridden by your regular “tourist” in Tokyo, so don’t worry about it. For Tokyo you have “virtually” 100% coverage with the Suica/Pasmo card to ride the train systems.

As for “must visit” places, it just depends on what you are interested in. Tokyo has the neon lights of Central Tokyo and it has the mountains and hiking trails of western Tokyo.
